I designed and pieced this quilt, beautifully long-arm quilted by Liz A. Shade, to tell the stories of neighbors, as recounted in newspapers, who have been detained or deported from the United States.  The portraits are fictionalized, but intended to put a face on a student detained at her graduation ceremony; a worker taken away from  an automobile factory; and a doctor, Haitian businessman, gardener variously removed from their places of business or when appearing for their court dates to work through the amnesty process as instructed. No one doubts that our country's immigration system is in need of reform, but let us be humane and "first do no harm" to individuals, communities and our nation.
